Purdue University has minors for almost every single foreign language offered at our school. The American Sign Languages classes are often super hard to get into because ASL 101 fills up quickly and usually within the first day that the registration opens (often with juniors and seniors, making ASL 201-202 having fewer people in them because the students eligible to take the class are graduating before they can make it that far). With more ASL continuing lectures here, Purdue would be able to allow more students into the classes and even begin to offer a minor in Deaf studies since students would be able to get in earlier and have enough time to finish the requirements. This would also open up the opportunity to allow an interpreting certificate to begin here, which could help bring many more students to study at Purdue. Currently there are only three ASL interpreter training programs in Indiana.
We, the undersigned, call on Purdue University to hire more continuing lectures in American Sign Language studies and begin the process of creating a Deaf studies minor and ASL interpreters program here at Purdue.
