Rosewood is a growing community where many residents, students, and workers depend on Route 86 as their primary transportation link to downtown. Despite its importance, this route faces persistent issues:
1. Frequent Delays: Passengers often wait over 30 minutes due to chronic delays, with no reliable real-time updates from the transit app.
2. Harsh Waiting Conditions: There are no shelters at Rosewood or key downtown stops for Routes 81–86, forcing passengers to wait in freezing temperatures, snow, or rain.
3. Inadequate Frequency: Route 86 does not meet the demand of the growing population, leading to overcrowding and long wait times.
4. Ignored Complaints: Multiple emails and feedback from passengers to the transit authority have gone unanswered.
These issues disrupt daily commutes, cause stress, and pose health risks during extreme weather. This petition calls for increased bus frequency, accurate communication, and installation of weather-protected shelters to better serve Rosewood and downtown passengers.
Petition to Improve Route 86 Bus Service
To: Saskatoon Transit
Subject: Request to Improve Timeliness, Frequency, and Shelter Facilities for Route 86 and Other Routes
We, the undersigned, are residents, students, and workers who rely on the city’s public transit system, particularly Route 86, as a critical means of transportation. We are writing to raise urgent concerns about the persistent challenges we face and to request immediate improvements to service reliability and infrastructure.
Key Issues
1. Frequent Delays Across All Seasons:
Route 86 experiences significant delays regardless of the season. Delays of up to 30 minutes or more are common.
Real-time tracking on the app or map is often inaccurate, showing buses as “on time” or arriving in “1 minute” while passengers wait much longer without updates.
2. Lack of Bus Shelters:
In Rosewood and at key downtown stops, there are no shelters for passengers waiting for buses like Routes 81, 82, 83, 84, and 86.
Passengers, including children and elderly individuals, are left to wait in harsh weather conditions—freezing temperatures, snow, and rain—with no protection.
These open waiting areas pose safety and health risks, especially in the winter when exposure to the cold can lead to severe discomfort or illness.
3. Insufficient Communication:
Notifications about delays are inconsistent, leaving passengers without the information they need to plan their commutes.
Emails sent to the transit authority often go unanswered, leaving residents feeling neglected.
4. High Demand with Inadequate Service:
As the only commute option for many in Rosewood, Route 86 is overcrowded and underserves the growing population.
Our Request
To address these issues and provide a better experience for public transit users, we respectfully request the following actions:
1. Increase the Frequency of Route 86 Buses: Add more buses to the route to reduce wait times, especially during peak hours.
2. Ensure Accurate Real-Time Updates: Improve tracking systems and communication so that delays are promptly reported to passengers.
3. Build Shelters at Key Stops:
Install enclosed, weather-protected shelters at major stops in Rosewood and downtown, particularly for Routes 81-86.
Ensure these shelters have proper seating, lighting, and space for passengers.
4. Improve Communication Channels:
Provide a dedicated support system for passengers to report issues and receive timely responses from transit authorities.
Why This Matters
Public transportation is essential for students, workers, and residents who depend on it daily. The lack of reliability, infrastructure, and communication severely impacts commuters, causing stress, missed commitments, and unsafe waiting conditions. The harsh winter weather and busy downtown areas only exacerbate these challenges.
We believe that by addressing these concerns, the city can significantly improve the transit experience and better serve the needs of its community.
