Council Notes
1. There is a need and a move within Scotland to promote Gaelic and revitalise it, recognising its position as a threatened language.
2. The European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages 1992 designates a special place for Scottish Gaelic within the whole of Europe.
3. Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005, passed by the Scottish Parliament, specifically to create a statutory framework, by which public organisations provide a framework for the provision of Gaelic in Scotland.
4. The existance of public bodies such as Bòrd na Gàidhlig and Comunn na Gàidhlig, which are long established, and provide funding and aid to all organisations looking to establish Gaelic language policy and planning.
5. The existance of a Gaelic Language Plan and Gaelic Development officer at the University of Glasgow, and the advice of Bòrd na Gàidhlig to the University of the Highlands and Islands, for its constituent colleges to develop similar policy and planning.
6. The significant and growing Gaelic-speaking community, both within the University and within the City and County. This is evidenced, firstly, by the establishment of the Council-funded Gaelic Club and position of Gaelic Development Officer, and by the establishment of Gaelic-Medium Education Units at Gilcomston and Hazlehead Schools.
7. The significant work, done by the University in the past, to further the cause of Gaelic ie. Rannsachadh na Gàidhlig, The Gaelic Summer School, The Gaelic Arts Project.
Council Believes
1. That the Gaelic Language constitutes a key part of the cultural diversity of the University of Aberdeen and Scotland at large and that the University has a part to play in its promotion and revitalisation.
2. That the Gaelic Language has a special place as one of the autocthanous languages of Scotland and the United Kingdom
Council Resolves
1. To mandate the Student President and the President for Welfare and Equal Opportunities to lobby the University to employ a Gaelic Development Officer for the purpose of developing and implementing a Gaelic Language Plan within the University.
2. To provide all major Student Association documents (ie. The Constitution,) and all newly purchased signage in a bilingual Gaelic-English format, taking the advice of and in conjunction with all available sources, including those detailed herein.
3. To make provision for Gaelic within the Student media, for example Gaudie and ASR.

To mandate the President for Education and Employability to lobby the University for the provision for free or subsidised Gaelic language classes to those as want, recognising that the University is currently going through curriculum reform and that this could fit in with the sustained study program.
