LD 418 will give away Maine's 4 electoral votes to the winner of the national popular vote in the Presidential election.
The electoral college is key to the foundation of our Republic, protecting small states from large states and giving the voice of Maine voters value.
Some states have already joined the compact, and when the number of electoral votes those states control reaches 270, the compact will take effect, fundamentally altering Presidential elections in America.
We the undersigned oppose LD 418, the bill to enter the national popular vote interstate compact because it will undermine and weaken Maine's voice on the national stage.
I oppose LD 418 because it will give away Maine's 4 electoral votes to the winner of the national popular vote in the Presidential election.
The electoral college is key to the foundation of our Republic, protecting small states from large states and giving strength to the voice of Maine voters.
There is no justification for giving away Maine's electoral votes to the winner of a national election. We urge the Maine Legislature's Committee on Veterans and Legal Affairs to oppose LD 418, and we ask all state lawmakers to oppose it as well.
