This past summer, in spite of the high publicity one incident of a child dying in a closed, hot car, it seemed we were hearing about multiple instances of this horror happening. In Connecticut alone, there were three within a two week period.
On November 11, 2014, I heard on the news a Ct. man from Ridgefield was being arraigned for Involuntary Manslaughter in the death of his 15 month old son, after being forgotten in the back seat of his car. In Connecticut this charge is a misdemeanor with a maximum prison time of one year. In a discussion on the local news, this will most likely be settled out of court with no jail time.
At one point, it was suggested by someone, somewhere, that parents put their cellphones on the back seat so they will remember their child strapped into a car seat before locking the door with the child left to die. It is the most absurd solution to remembering what should be, the most important thing in your life.
We, the undersigned, request Congress to take action to hold parents and pet owners criminally responsible for the death of a child or pet left in a closed, hot vehicle, carrying a mandatory jail time of no less than 10-15 years without parole.
