Whole Foods Market has requested a zoning use variance to construct a 78,000 s.f. Whole Foods megamarket on the Gowanus Canal in a manufacturing zone, contrary to the zoning regulation.
While New York City has created a burgeoning light industrial base over the past 20 years, it has simultaneously lost over 1,797 acres of zoned manufacturing sites, with over 500 acres in Brooklyn, between 2002-2007 alone. The Gowanus area has been an important refuge for small businesses, light and medium manufacturers, artist and artisans who are finding it increasingly difficult to find affordable space suitable for manufacturing in the city.
Don’t let more manufacturing development sites in the city be eliminated. Tell the Board of Standards and Appeals to reject WFM variance request at the hearing on December 13, 2011.
We, the undersigned, ask that the NYC Board of Standards and Appeals reject Whole Food Markets' request for a use variance at 172-220 Third Avenue.
