Renfrewshire council are proposing parking charges in Johnstone and Renfrew, yes there is a problem with lack of parking spaces however installing parking meters is not the answer. Council said the 'Parking charges in Paisley were popular' We feel these charges would have a significant negative impact on town centre resulting in massive decrease in trade in Johnstone town centre, it would also affect residents and people working in Johnstone . Council claim parking charges would increase footfall if that is the case then surely Braehead and Silverburn would have introduced such a system. What is needed in more free parking and improved signage. These parking charges will have a negative and disastrous impact on shops and business who are already struggling to compete with shopping centres and internet shopping.
We the undersigned urge Renfrewshire council to rethink these plans to impose parking charges in Johnstone and Renfrew, as it will have a negative and disastrous impact on Johnstone town centre, for shops. business. residents and people who come into Johnstone to work. Studies have shown it does not improve the town centres but instead drives people away.
