After positive, negative and neutral feedback I will be approaching the August 5th meeting with a new petition. We need to get rid of a few laws more than focusing on new ones. Please check my Facebook feed for the petition.
The laws I want to remove are 22.7(3) If the applicant has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor, the department shall review evidence including but not limited to the following:
a. Of cial court record, which includes charges and disposition;
b. Copies of arrest records;
c. A letter from the applicant explaining the nature of the conviction;
d. All addiction/mental health evaluations and proof of treatment, if the conviction involved a drug- or alcohol-related offense and if treatment was obtained or required; and
e. A letter from the probation of cer addressing probationary conditions and current status, if the applicant is currently on probation.
22.9(4) Applicants must have a high school diploma or general educational development certi cate (GED). NOTE: Tattoo artists granted a permit prior to January 1, 2010, will not be required to obtain a high school diploma or GED.
Neither of these laws pertain to public health and safety. Tattooing is a trade not a school and being a felon or arrested as noting to do with public health.
This petition is for law changes that would prevent those that have no knowledge about the industry from getting licence in the state of Iowa without training.
Please share and repost.
I'm a 25+ year veteran in this industry. First I would like to address the licensing of shops and artist.
1) to obtain a tattoo establishment permit you must obtain an artist permit.
Reasons for this:
A.) If you are not an artist or have no experiences in the field then how can you fully understand what it takes to own and operate a tattoo establishment?
b.. to obtain an artist permit you must be apprenticed by an artist that has at least 5 consecutive licensed years in Iowa. The apprenticeship should be for at least 1-2 years.
e. If the artist loses their position at an establishment then the owner is responsible of reporting this to the local health dept.
f. Random verification on new permits should be performed at the beginning of the year. Making sure the applicant is not committing fraud.
The number one concern of ours is to provide a quality piece of art that the client can have for the rest of their life and to do so in a safe sterile environment.
Any artist that has been trained properly knows how to tear down and set up without contaminating their equipment, station, client, and their work environment .
The point of it all is every artist is different and the way they are trained to tattoo is different. There are always going to be new devices and new products. The key is the knowledge of proper blood borne pathogens preventative measures, proper set up, tear down, and proper disposal. I've had 25 plus years of results. Trial an error has built my foundations and fundamentals.
Please consider all the artists as a whole and not just random voices. I mean no disrespect to those who may disagree with me. I just want to make sure we are all on the same page. Thank you for your time and continued efforts to improve our community.
