Properly Fund Education in Mississippi

This petition is supported by the Mississippi Statewide Consortium for the Improvement of Education (M.S.C.I.E.). M.S.C.I.E. includes representatives in Mississippi from K-12 through graduate school such as the Mississippi Association of Educators, American Association of University Professors, American Federation of Teachers, Faculty Senate Presidents, staff and students.
The recession is causing this state along with many others to cut back funding for crucial services, education included. The proposed budget of the Governor will cut education by 310 million dollars in 2011! If these cuts go through Mississippi’s educational system will be weakened for many years to come.
These cuts will seriously damage the future of our students and also the tremendous loss of jobs and income will make it that much harder for many local businesses to survive. Maintaining jobs in a severe recession like this one will help to prevent a further slide into recession. Funds need to be found from the federal government and efforts should be made at the state and institutional level to keep student supplies, staff and programs funded properly.
Please help do the right thing for our economy and for our kids.
We, the undersigned, believe that properly funding education is the right thing to do for our children, the state and our future. This recession was not started by our children, but unless more funds are found they will pay a heavy price when the cuts are made.
Already in some areas supplies are short, staff are being laid off and numerous programs are on the chopping block. Not only will these cutbacks short change our children, but they will be a blow to many local businesses as well when layoffs and spending cuts lead to reduced revenues.
Funds need to be found, hopefully from Federal sources in the shape of a jobs bill. Alternatively, revenues at the state level should be enhanced to ensure that education is on a sound and sustainable financial footing.
