Now that you have viewed our Public Service Announcement which alludes to the negative impact simple figures of speech can convey; it is prudent that you take action to stop it.
By signing this pledge, you are demonstrating that you understand that gendered insults go beyond hurting of feelings. They stigmatize women and contribute to an environment of disparity between the sexes. This disparity can be easily demonstrated in terms of women's salary, and the frequency of women in powerful positions.
By curbing the use of derogatory language about women, we can work to change people's assumptions and associations about women. This in turn can foster a positive environment in which people can be treated more fairly.
I am signing this pledge to lend support to the notion of eliminating derogatory terms about women from my vocabulary.
I will think more critically about the kinds of words that I use in an attempt to more fairly represent women, as well as men, at the University of Maryland and surrounding regions.
