MTA Bus Company, an agency whose operating costs are fully reimbursed by the City of New York is planning $21 million worth of cuts to express bus service to Manhattan beginning later this year and into 2020. These proposed cuts are on top of previous service cuts done to MTA Bus Company express bus routes throughout the 2010s decade. Now, the State is weighing options for congestion pricing for those traveling into Manhattan, but wants to leave Queens/Brooklyn/Bronx residents without a real choice in order to access Manhattan. The MTA Bus Company wants to force Queens/Brooklyn/Bronx residents to either use the Subway, which is unreliable and unsafe; the Long Island Rail Road, which is significantly more expensive than the express bus and also suffers from reliability issues, very poor management, and a culture of very bad customer relations; or Metro-North Railroad, which is also significantly more expensive than the express bus. MTA Bus Company express bus routes serve many areas that lack convenient subway access and lack convenient Long Island Rail Road or Metro-North Railroad access. Furthermore, the MTA Bus Company's sister agency MTA New York City Transit, who shares management level employees with MTA Bus Company has had a history of being disinterested in catering to express bus riders and preferring or outright forcing express bus customers to use rail services.
We, the undersigned call on our New York City Council members to stop pretending that MTA Bus Company express bus service is not their responsibility and to work to prevent massive service cuts to MTA Bus Company express bus service and to pressure the MTA Bus Company to invest in express bus service in light of recent congestion pricing proposals. We also call on our State Senators and Assembly members to pressure the MTA Bus Company into finding ways to prevent massive service cuts and pressure the MTA Bus Company to invest in express bus service in light of recent congestion pricing proposals. Preventing service cuts to express bus service and investing express bus services will ensure that areas that lack convenient access to rail services can readily access Manhattan and provide Queens/Brooklyn/Bronx commuters into Manhattan with a real choice of service.
