Most doctors and physical therapists recommend that kids carry no more than 10% to 50% of their body weight in their backpacks.
A child's spine is made up of 33 bones (vertebrae), and between the bones are discs that act as natural shock absorbers. When children place heavy backpacks on their shoulders they tend to lean backwards. To compensate, children may arch their back or bend forward at the hips. In return the child develops shoulder, neck, and back pains.

Please try to prevent this unnecessary pain by informing the U.S. Department of Education that schools should have a limit on how much children should carry dependent upon age and weight, by signing this petition.
