Carbon tax has added €1.20 to the price of a bag (40kg) of Coal and €0.26 to a bale of Peat Briquettes in 2013.
This year, government plans to double this charge to €2.40 on a bag (40kg) of Coal and €0.52 on a bale of Peat Briquettes.
These taxes hit the poorest in our society hardest, because they depend most on solid fuel for winter warmth.
It is an established fact that over 20% of Irish households are officially suffering fuel poverty.
We, the undersigned, are concerned citizens who urge our Minister for Finance to act now to postpone the doubling of Carbon Tax on Solid Fuel in 2014.
