Many of the swingeing cuts outlined by the coalition government in the UK on Wednesday 20th October disproportionately affect the poor - particularly families. Welfare cuts, housing benefit cuts, social housing cuts, targeting of tax credits, imposition of higher fees for further education - all conspire to make poor people pay a higher price for UK debt, which was brought about by reckless gambling with the public purse by the financial sector - ie the rich and powerful in society.
This Tory led coalition government is more concerned with disabling the power of the state and creating a privatised economy than with paying off the national debt in an equitable manner.
We, the undersigned, call on the UK government to reconsider disproportionately targeting poor UK families in the national budget cuts as outlined on Wednesday October 20th, 2010.
