We are wanting to have a playground zone to be placed out front of Daycares, as there have been too many near misses and accidents in these areas.
I personally witnessed exactly this back in October at our daycare located at 450 Woodvale Road East NW, Edmonton, AB T6L 6G5. It was raining on this particular day. There was a father and son wanting to cross the road. They were between two cars and were looking to see if it was clear since it was raining. There was a car heading North but was far enough away to stop so the father started to cross with the boy close behind. Instead of stopping the driver honked at the father and son. Understandably, the father loudly informed the driver that there was a daycare there and they should be more careful, and considerate in that area. I have also seen City buses and other vehicles quickly drive past parents trying to get their children into the back driver side of the vehicles.
We feel that to protect our children there should be a playground zone covering any daycare that is not already covered by one or by a school zone.
The ages of the children in most of these facilities is from 12 months to 12 years.
We, the undersigned, call on the City of Edmonton to place playground zones where daycares are located that are not currently in a playground zone or school zone.
