Thanks to everyone who supported the Plastic Bag Free Torquay petition.
We will be delivering the online signatures along with those collected on paper to our State Member, Andrew Katos MP next week. Overall, we have received in excess of 1300 signatures. Well done everyone!
The campaign has received a great deal of local traction, and we are making positive steps forward.
Let's hope for a positive outcome at State level.
The Plastic Bag Free Torquay Committee
In 2010, a small group of people from the community of Torquay/Jan Juc commenced a campaign to ban single use shopping bags from retail outlets in our town.
Litter from single use plastic shopping bags poses a significant threat to our environment, particularly our oceans.
As a coastal community, the people of the Torquay/Jan Juc region recognise the importance of the health of our oceans. Removing single use shopping bags from retail outlets will result in a significant reduction of waste in our landfill and also our ocean.
The petition is two-fold: to garner quantitative data relating to the support for the proposal from the local community; and to request the State Government of Victoria to consider legislative change to ban single use shopping bags throughout Victoria.
The Petition of Residents of Torquay and Jan Juc draws to the attention of the House:
Subsequent to the successful implementation of bans on single-use plastic shopping bags in retail outlets by various local and State Governments throughout Australia and the world, the residents of Torquay and Jan Juc have commenced a campaign to implement a similar ban in the Torquay/Jan Juc region. The intention is for Torquay/Jan Juc area to be single-use plastic shopping bag free by 2011.
We, the undersigned, appreciate the natural beauty of the Surf Coast, and as a major retail centre of the region, recognise that banning plastic shopping bags in the Torquay/Jan Juc area will be a significant step towards saving our natural environment. We fully support the ban of single-use shopping bags and believe that such an action would be reinforced by the enactment of State-based legislation to this effect.
The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Assembly of Victoria implement legislation banning single-use shopping bags in retail outlets throughout Victoria by the end of 2011.
