The North Adams Community School Board, located in Decatur, Indiana, passed on a 3-2 vote on February 10, 2009, a plan to reconfigure the three Elementary Schools to pre-K to K at Monmouth, grades 1-2 at Southeast, and grades 3, 4 and 5 at Northwest.

This plan has not been received well by the public. A petition of 450 names were gathered against the reconfiguration prior to the vote, yet it was ignored by the School Administration and the School Board. Only a handful of people want the reconfiguration, for reasons that remain mostly unclear.

Evidence for this type of move is not definite, and in fact, our committee has found very compelling evidence to support our current K-5 structure. The School Board acted too quickly, and did not discuss this matter in public view.

We also want our School Board to become an elected Board, with possibly seven members, thus eliminating our current appointed system.

We, the undersigned, oppose the North Adams Community Schools (NACS) decision to reconfigure our Elementary Schools.

We, as concerned citizens, demand that the NACS School Board rescind this decision from February 10, and put our Elementary Schools back to a K-5 format.

We further recommend that the NACS School Board make themselves an elected school board using Indiana Code IC 20-23-8-10, "A change in a plan may be initiated by one (1) of the following procedures: . . . (2) By a resolution adopted by the governing body of the school corporation."
