Petition to Remove the Newly Installed Stop Sign at Belmont Ave and Wright St
- Target:
- Town of Babylon
- Region:
- United States of America
In April 2025, a stop sign was installed at the intersection of Belmont Avenue and Wright Street in the Town of Babylon. Prior to this change, the intersection had a clearly marked pedestrian crosswalk and a “Yield to Pedestrians” sign, which was appropriate given the extremely low foot traffic in the area. The east side of Belmont Avenue borders a public park with no residential housing, and it is not uncommon for months to pass without a single pedestrian crossing the street at this location.
Belmont Avenue is a double-lined road intended to function as a main thoroughfare. The newly installed stop sign has transformed this intersection into an unnecessary 3-way stop, disrupting traffic flow on a major road used daily by many residents and commuters.
The change has resulted in increased vehicle wear and tear, driver frustration, and unnecessary environmental impact due to idling and frequent stop-and-go movement. There is no evidence of a safety issue that required such a drastic change, and the current setup is disproportionate to the level of pedestrian use. A return to the original configuration would better serve the community without compromising safety.
We, the undersigned, respectfully request that the Town of Babylon remove the stop sign installed at the intersection of Belmont Avenue and Wright Street in April 2025. This stop sign has created an unnecessary 3-way stop and causes more harm than good. Below are the reasons why it should be removed:
1. Extremely low foot traffic:
The east side of Belmont Avenue is a park with no residential homes, and it is common for months to pass without a single pedestrian crossing at this location. The previous crosswalk and “Yield to Pedestrians” signage were appropriate for this context.
2. Major roadway disruption:
Belmont Avenue is a double-lined road meant to serve as a main corridor through the area. Introducing a full stop at this location unnecessarily interrupts traffic flow, especially during peak hours, and contradicts the purpose of a corridor-style road.
3. Increased vehicle wear and environmental impact:
Forcing drivers to stop multiple times daily increases brake wear, fuel use, and idling — which not only adds financial strain for drivers but also contributes to greater local air pollution.
4. Driver frustration and inefficiency:
Local drivers who use Belmont Avenue frequently have expressed growing frustration. The stop sign slows everyone down without any proven benefit and is perceived as an overreaction to a minor concern.
We urge the Town of Babylon to reevaluate this intersection and restore the prior configuration that balanced safety with traffic efficiency.
