The issue is the increasing number of commuters that board the intercity trains at Central, Redfern and Strathfield, only then to alight at Strathfield, Eastwood, Epping and Hornsby during the busy evening peak periods.
Due to the high volume, most Central Coast and Newcastle commuters are forced to stand, which is not fair considering they have a lot further to travel and pay a higher fare due to the longer distance traveled.
These "suburban" commuters have 2 services for every 1 intercity service that go to these stations and the time difference is only 5-10 minutes.
We the undersigned call on the NSW Minister for Transport to restrict the access to the intercity platforms at Central, Redfern and Strathfield stations by means of installing ticket barriers to separate intercity from suburban platforms and allowing tickets with "Zone 3" stations access only.
Suburban commuters will then have to use the suburban platforms and trains during evening peak periods.
