On Jan 21, 2010, with its ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, the Supreme Court ruled that corporations are "persons", and thus that corporate campaign contributions are entitled to protection under the First Amendment as free speech.
The truth is that only human beings are people. Corporations are legal fictions. the Supreme Court is misguided in principle, and wrong on the law. In a democracy, people - and only people - rule.
We, of Occupy Durham's Committee to End Corporate Personhood, are asking the Durham City Council to join with other cities in our country and pass a resolution urging our elected officials to work toward ending corporate personhood by amending the U.S. Constitution.
Please help us by signing the petition, which will be presented to the Durham City Council.
We, the undersigned people of the United States of America, reject the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Citizens United, and move to amend the U.S. Constitution to:
* Firmly establish that money is not "free speech."
* Firmly establish that human beings, not corporations, are persons entitled to constitutional rights under the Bill Of Rights.
