The United States has continued to funnel billions of dollars to the Pakistani armed forces in sophisticated weapons and cash – most recently a $3.4 billion package announced in October 2010 under the State Department’s Foreign Military Finance Program, and another $3 billion is scheduled to go to Pakistan this year.
Bin Laden's discovery in a wealthy suburb of Abbottabad raises more than a few questions over US military funding to Pakistan.
After years of former Pakistani military dictator General Musharraf assuring the world that bin Laden was either dead or in Afghanistan, he was found and dispatched by US special forces in the town of Abbottabad, a mere 30 miles – 50km – as the crow flies from the capital Islamabad.
By 2008, the United States political and military leadership had lost all remnants of faith in the trustworthiness of the Pakistani military and its intelligence wing, the ISI, internally acknowledging that it consistently "hunted with the hounds and ran with the hares", including the Afghan Taliban, the Haqqanis, and the Lashkar-e-Taiba – and was involved in planning terrorist attacks from Kabul to Mumbai.
I was shocked and dismayed to learn that after billions of U.S. dollars were funneled to Pakistan for counterterrorism efforts, most notably, tracking down and removing Osama bin Laden and his organization’s leadership, Osama himself had been living in downtown Abbottabad within a compound in plain sight of Pakistani’s elite military academy and less than 70 miles from the Pakistan capital of Islamabad.
Evidence is sufficient enough to immediately suspend all U.S. funds to Pakistan pending a thorough investigation into Pakistani intelligence and the country’s current and previous leaders; Asif Ali Zardari and Pervez Musharraf, respectively.
As you are aware, after the billions in funding and supposed partnership between U.S. and Pakistani forces, the U.S. alone, without any assistance from Pakistan, conducted the raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound and achieved its objective of removing him from power.
I urge you to act immediately in suspending funds to Pakistan and its leadership who has shown little support to our efforts to bring international terrorists to justice and who, as recent events have shown, may have aided and abetted America’s Public Ememy #1 and his supporters for years.
