Toy is the only devoted Gibson player to have served in the US Military and to have served in and saw a lot of action in combat. . He was the master of tone...and used Gibson guitars to achieve this.
He was one of the most gifted guitarists in the history of American Music. He had his own unique sound and style that was different from anyone else. You could have listened to him alongside fifty other guitar players and have no trouble picking him out. Anyone who watched him flail away his lead guitar licks, WITH HIS THUMB only, walked away awestruck, dumbfounded and mesmerized all at once.
Toy wrote the majority of The Marshall Tucker Bands music, most importantly, he added amazing melodies to these songs that have been played all around the world for over 45 years.
