Silenced, hushed up and under reported. This is the reality of depression in Singapore. Among all the people with a mental illness in their lifetime, only 22.1% had consulted a psychiatrist. Adults often choose not to seek treatment because of various reasons such as the stigma that depressed individuals are ‘weak not sick’ and the fear of losing their jobs after declaring their conditions. With the Equality Act, more adults will be encouraged to seek treatment and help for their mental condition as well as to be more open to share their conditions with others. The Act will also reduce discrimination in terms of job opportunities for these depressed individuals.
We call on the Singapore judiciary to pass the Equality Act for mental health patients. This will help to ensure equal job opportunities for all.
