Miniature pot-bellied pigs and Backyard Chickens are increasing in popularity as domesticated pets. However, as such animals are still considered "livestock"and the keeping of such animals are illegal.
Children gain many benefits from participating in 4-H/FFA and other Youth Development animal projects: some are learning new things, caring for animals, solving problems and how make a difference in your neighborhood or even in the world.
Allowing these projects in the residential areas, will increase registration in both 4-H and FFA programs and in in turn will teach our youth the benefits and skills to help our communities throughout life.
We, the undersigned, are calling upon Allowing 4-H & FFA projects of ALL species AND to including chickens & potbelly pigs, as “pets” (including, but not limited to all city limits).
This is a petition to:
A.) Amend “PET” description to include the above.
B.) To exemptions 4-H/FFA animal projects.
We understand that there needs to be a closely controlled regulation to ensure that such animals do not become a nuisance or danger to the general public or the neighborhood in which they are kept.
This petition will be presented at the June 10, 2013 Council meeting.
