Permit Parking is NOT the Solution

Dear Westchester Neighbors:

To preserve the small town atmosphere we enjoy in Westchester, we must mobilize to stop the transformation of our neighborhood into Loyola Marymount University’s (LMU) free parking lot. Please sign this petition urging the university to adopt acceptable measures to prevent the LMU campus population from parking on our streets.

The Situation

Beginning August 27, ALL visitors will be charged to park on campus. In January 2013, any of the campus population who wish to park on campus will be charged approximately $ 700 per year. The choice is clear – pay to park on campus or park for FREE on the surrounding residential streets.

Permit Parking is NOT the Solution

LMU’s solution to the burden they are creating for our neighborhood is a Preferential Parking District (PPD). Permit parking, with the associated costs and inconveniences, is NOT a solution – it is a . . . nightmare!

LMU allocated $24,000 annually to fund two permits per house in a defined area, should residents elect to implement a PPD, but, not all streets close to LMU will benefit from the small subsidy which does not cover the cost of visitor or guest parking. For more information see www.whole100.org. The burden is on residents to create a PPD, which can take years to implement. The creation of PPDs also has the potential to create a ripple effect – when campus populations cannot park on one street they will park on the next – think graduation, 4th of July Parade EVERYDAY!

We will NOT be Ignored Any Longer

LMU sold the community on its Master Plan, promising “A Better LMU” with the guarantee that it would not be expanding its borders, its footprint. Using Westchester streets as its parking lot is an expansion that will impact ALL of Westchester.

LMU ignores the residents of Westchester. LMU has a responsibility to consider and adopt policies to ensure that Westchester does NOT become LMU’s FREE parking lot.

We, the undersigned residents of Westchester, oppose Loyola Marymount University’s decision to begin charging for on-campus parking. LMU must take acceptable measures to prevent students, faculty, and staff from parking on Westchester streets. We demand that LMU address our concerns immediately.
