This is not about promoting public nudity as a societal default, but about recognising that clothing-optional events, when properly organised and responsibly attended, are not acts of indecency — they are legitimate expressions of culture, health, environmental stewardship, and personal freedom. In many parts of the world, such events are embraced as part of progressive, inclusive societies that respect both individual choice and public standards.
This petition forms part of the broader cultural reform platform proposed by NaturismRE. It seeks to modernise Australian perspectives and policies by ensuring that clothing-optional activities are treated fairly under the law, with clear distinctions between respectful naturism and genuinely indecent conduct. We call for legal recognition and safeguards that uphold the rights of citizens to participate in body-positive, clothing-optional events in designated or appropriate areas, while preserving public decency and safety.
Australia can lead the way in promoting healthy body image, reducing shame and stigma, fostering freedom of expression, and encouraging deeper connections to nature — all without compromising societal standards or public wellbeing. Let us move forward with clarity, respect, and balance.
We, the undersigned, call on Australian state and local authorities to create a clear, respectful, and legally protected framework for permitting clothing-optional events in public spaces, under defined and controlled conditions.
Currently, individuals or organisations wishing to host a body-positive or naturist event in a park, beach, or other public space face legal uncertainty, unclear permit pathways, and the risk of harassment or prosecution — even when the intent is peaceful, respectful, and non-sexual.
Events such as:
Nature-based meditation, yoga, wedding, large gathering, or spiritual observances
Body-positivity walks or charity events
Environmental clean-ups (e.g. nude beach or trail cleaning days)
Art installations or social awareness projects (e.g. Spencer Tunick-style gatherings)
Clothing-optional bushwalks or picnics
...are all examples of socially valuable activities that should be allowed to proceed in public spaces with proper permissions and mutual respect.
We respectfully request:
Local councils and relevant permit authorities to introduce a standard permit application process for clothing-optional events, with defined criteria and conduct expectations
That such events be clearly signposted, with time-limited access, to protect the rights of both participants and non-participants
That organisers be permitted to promote such events without fear of criminalisation, provided the event is non-sexual, peaceful, and conducted under agreed guidelines
This is not about promoting public nudity as a default, but about recognising that clothing-optional events, when well-organised, are not indecent — they are expressions of culture, health, environmental stewardship, and freedom.
This petition is part of the NaturismRE cultural reform platform, seeking to ensure personal rights and public safety are balanced in modern Australia.
