Currently there are 3 options for urgent pediatric care in Harford County, MD ....an overburdened pediatric emergency room at Upper Chesapeake with long wait times and high co-pays, an on-call private physician who may charge for a phone consultation and then still refer the patient to the emergency room, and adult urgent care centers staffed by adult practitioners who are assessing with adult sized equipment.
Since urgent care centers offer more timely service and smaller co-pays, they are utilized by a large number of pediatric patients in the Harford County area. Unfortunately, this utilization has potentially resulted in an increase of pediatric medication errors creating a pediatric public safety issue that affects every child in Harford County.
We, the undersigned, call on the government of Harford County to provide the pediatric population of the county with a pediatric urgent care center staffed with pediatricians who will offer safe, age appropriate, and cost effective care during off hours and weekends.
This petition will be presented to Mr. David Craig, County Executive, on March 17th.
