The Town of Pictou has a long and illustrious history of providing quality education for its residents and beyond. Pictou Academy was founded in 1816 by Dr. Thomas McCulloch and intended to offer to all aspiring students, regardless of religion, a liberal, science-based education.
By 1885, PA was the largest secondary school in Nova Scotia. The centenary committee of 1916 sought to ensure its longevity by establishing the Pictou Academy Educational Foundation (PAEF). Over the years, PA has survived a number of threats - fires (x2), finances, and "unconstitutional government and religious intolerance" (MacPhie, 1914). At each juncture, however, its eminence as a valued and valuable educational institution has sustained it.
Mere days after celebrating its 200 anniversary in July 2016, PA was confronted with its greatest threat yet - school closure. PA, along with its feeder schools - McCulloch Middle and Pictou Elementary - are under review.
Our school board representative claims "the status quo is not an option" so we are proposing a P-12 school. This option will allow Pictou students to continue to access a quality education within their own community - good for the students, good for the town!
We, the undersigned, call on Nova Scotia Premier Stephen Mac Neil to ensure that Pictou students continue to have access to a quality education within their own community by providing Pictou with a new P-12 school.
The educational, physical and mental health benefits of this option are undeniable.
Towns need their schools and schools benefit by being in their towns!
