Mass killings are fast become a social epidemic, and our society needs to be better protected. Violent video games are in NO WAY nurturing and helping to develop the proper functioning of the human mental capacity and psyche, and vulnerable members of our society (the ill, the young, and the troubled) are getting their minds warped by the nonstop graphic violence depicted in video games, where the sole purpose is to kill.
Parents have to do a better job of vetting what their kids are exposed to, and violent video games are detrimental and counter-productive to providing a sane and productive mind, where killing as many as possible is the objective.
Common sense and logic dictates that the adrenaline kick, and the on-the-edge-over-your-seat high that these games deliver is counter-intuitive to real life, and many cannot differentiate or become detached between fact and fiction.
What good do these violent video games contribute to our society? I beg to find any good answer, but I can see and research is showing a lot of bad, in more ways than one. Many mass shootings and killings perpetrated in the USA (and in Canada), namely the Columbine massacre and the Aurora, Colorado movie theatre shootings just to name a few, were carried out by individuals obsessed with violent video games.
The recent Moncton, NB, Canada shooting rampage, where five officers were shot and three were killed, was carried out by a video gamer, dressed up as Rambo and roaming the streets openly carrying prohibited weapons. Were violent video games the sole reason for his rampage, of course not, but what I propose is...it surely didn't help.
So many are quick to discount the negative effects the graphic violent content these video games portray, and many jump on the bandwagon that these games are in no way the reason that lone nuts go on a shooting rampage. I strongly disagree for the simple reason that these games contribute to our social problems rather than being a solution to the dilemma that we face everyday in our cities and towns.
Yes bad things do happen by bad people, regardless if violent video games existed or not, but the very fact that these games exist and a common denominator in many of these mass killings and shootings are directly attributed to people obsessed with playing these games, is cause for concern. Not all incidents reflect this trend, but many do, and one has to start thinking of the bigger social implications of the validity and necessity of such graphic forms of entertainment.
The “entertainment value” that these manufacturing companies are trying to sell into mainstream society is a sham, and the only fiction that they truly produce is their marketing and their selling points, because their product is deadly…on screen and in real world.
When the mighty dollar supersedes the safety and security of our societies, and the well-being of all concerned is replaced by the bottom line in company ledgers, it means something is off and just not right and action is needed.
We do not need more of the same, where warped minds are whipped up into a frenzy after killing their way to higher levels. Graphic bloodletting and violence is not a form of art and entertainment, but a sign of a detachment with reality and a loss of our collective innocence.
Have we not seen enough of violence, hatred and bloodshed, with all the world wars and civil wars that have occurred in our darker past of human history that our society now needs to revert to forms of entertainment that glorifies killing and violence? I for one say enough is enough.
We, the undersigned, call on the Canadian and American governments to restrict, implement changes, control content or otherwise ban the manufacture and sale of violent video games.
Changes are needed and time is of the essence.
