The YCSD prohibits all use of the YHS Turf Field in January and February-regardless of temperature. This closure is in addition to the year round limited access our youth sports suffer.
The closure includes all High School Athletics-with or without coaching staff. Teams are forced to hold late night practices inside our gymnasium rather than on our Turf during daylight-even if we're blessed with unseasonably warm weather.
We have the good fortune of coaches who've been at the pinnacle of their sport and players eager to replicate them-allow them to use our Turf field to better achieve their goals.
A YSCD administrator claimed this is to preserve and lengthen Turf life but ignored multiple requests to show supporting documentation.
Several other comparable schools were contacted and none close their turf-all were bewildered with the premise and one even laughed saying: "that's what it's for".
I hope you agree.
We want the YSCD to remove the restrictions it places on Turf Field usage and allow our students and athletic teams to use our Turf Field year round as was intended.
Clear the Turf after snowfalls and except for thunder and lightning, keep our Turf Field open and accessible.
