Open Enrollment should be extended to adjacent districts, like it has been in the past. I have been misinformed about Open Enrollment, District Employment and the unwillingness to help my children remain in their Elementary School in Brunswick.

My family has recently moved from Brunswick to Valley City. We are right on the border by one street, dividing Brunswick School District and Buckeye School District. My children absolutely love Hickory Ridge Elementary School, which has been their home school they have been attending. I was told that there was Open Enrollment and I was not worried about our move and planned to keep my children in the school they love. Also, the school where I volunteer at least 3-4 times a week and participate in the majority of school events. At the end of the school year (2015-2016), I was informed that there was not Open Enrollment and my children were NOT allowed to go to the only school they have known. They were going to be forced to go to a new school without even a CHOICE.

During the summer, I became a Volleyball Coach for a middle school in Brunswick and was under the assumption that I was hired as a "District Employee" and then my children would be able to attend Hickory Ridge in Brunswick. Awaiting August 1st when Open Enrollment is decided, my two children received APPROVAL letters. Then hours later, we received denied letters because there was "confusion" about eligibility. Coaches are NOT considered District employees, which is extremely unfair in regards to the amount of time, energy, and support that coaches direct to our students/players. Not only did I work hard to achieve 6+ certifications for this coaching position, but I was supporting Brunswick City Schools. My children were not enrolled anywhere until 5 days before school starting because Brunswick District is unwilling to work with me or even sit down and discuss this unfortunate situation. I was willing to do anything for my children and the district was not willing to do anything for my children. Michael Mayell said in a recent article "but I have always said if we make a decision, make it in favor of the child.” Deciding to approve children for Open Enrollment and then denying them to attend a school they love because of board policies is unjust and unfair.

This has caused extreme distress to my family and mostly my children because they were forced to go to an unfamiliar school five days before the 2016-2017 school year was starting. They had five days to complete Buckeye District Summer Reading/Homework, return and buy new school supplies for Buckeye and experience a terrible first day of school.

Please support my children and others for Open Enrollment in Brunswick City Elementary Schools for adjacent (bordering) Districts.

Bordering districts SHOULD be allowed to open enroll in schools that are 5 minutes away from their house.
