Established by a United Nations resolution in 1981, the International Day of Peace affirms peace as a key international goal and provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations and nations around the globe to perform practical acts of peace on a common day.
The International Day of Peace was formally set to September 21st in 2002 and is marked by numerous events and celebrations worldwide, the aims of which are to acknowledge victories for peace that have been won, to promote peace education, and to rededicate the international community to the goal of achieving a more peaceful, just and sustainable world.
The International Day of Peace is also a day of global ceasefire and non-violence, during which individuals and nations alike are invited to cease all hostilities and armed conflict for a period of 24 hours. Whereas, we , the people of Ontario, proclaim that every September 21st be celebrated as ‘Ontario Day of Peace’ and that the Government of Ontario will include all citizens of Ontario in peace and sustainability education; and
As a precedent for the world, the City of Toronto, Canada recognized 21 September, 2009 as “International Day of Peace in Toronto” to “translate humanity's aspirations for world peace into a reality for future generations”,
Whereas, accordingly, we, the people of Ontario, the undersigned, urge action by all Ministers & the Ministry of Education within the Government of Ontario; Universities; Colleges; Schools and Local Communities, to:
a) Implement 21 September as Ontario Day of Peace annually to promote and foster the implementation of peace and sustainability education;
b) Educate for long term peace and sustainability, using interdisciplinary methods to instil values of environmental stewardship;
c) Increase awareness of issues of deforestation and forest degradation, the increasing agricultural land use for housing, roads and other non-agricultural purposes; and other global issues such as climate change, water reduction, ozone depletion, and acidification of oceans.
