It is widely recognised that aviation has an undesired impact on air quality, wildlife, the watercycle, weather systems, soil quality and human health.
UK airspace is recognised by the UK's Civil Aviation Authority as some of the most congested airspace in the world.
Despite this, the UK government expects UK air traffic to treble by 2030.
This petition asks for the weekly 24 hour no flight period.
We believe that the regrettable economic impact is by far offset by the potential benefit to the environment and people. For example, it is predicted that we will save at least 102, 740 metric tonnes of CO2 every week (5,342,480 tonnes a year). (Independent.co.uk archives-06/05/08 Cahal Milmo)
Having One Day Off is a simple, appreciable and easily monitored method of curbing air traffic. It is also a clear and considerate commitment from industry to the people of the UK, for whom there is a strong desire to support the well-being of the planet.
We suggest Tuesdays.
We, the undersigned, request that the UK Civil Aviation Authority arrange and ensure One Day Off, a weekly 24 hour no flight period, in which all UK air traffic, domestic, international, military, civil, commercial and private is grounded; and on our One Day Off, the UK is recognised and respected as a no flight zone.
We suggest Tuesdays.
