No To Tesco in Glastonbury!

Here are some of the reasons why we don’t need a new supermarket:

Jobs

Building a new Tesco supermarket on the edge of Glastonbury will not create employment or support the local economy, because of the negative impact it will have on local small businesses and the jobs supported by them. Independent studies show that for every 20 jobs Tesco creates, 30 are destroyed in the local area, mostly at smaller traders and their suppliers. We’d like to see a business on the site that offers real skills – not one that’s about stacking shelves and manning tills.

Local Economy

Glastonbury is a thriving, bustling town with a unique character. The many independent shops and outdoor markets are of interest to residents and tourists alike. Likewise, Street has a lively town centre. If people are drawn away from the town centres to shop at Tesco, this will reduce the normal ‘footfall’ levels which keep the High Streets alive. Shepton Mallet town centre has experienced many shop closures and job losses since Tesco arrived there and we do not want that to happen here.

Environment

Supermarkets encourage people to use their cars. This will increase noise and pollution levels and make this town less desirable to live in, for children to play in and, importantly for the local economy, less desirable to tourists.

Tesco also has a questionable track record on ethical behaviour.

Glastonbury is known around the world as a vibrant and ethically-based community. Let’s keep it that way - and help our local businesses too. Say no to Tesco in Glastonbury!
