We are the Salishan Community Health Advocates - residents from Tacoma’s East Side who volunteer to improve the health of their neighborhood and engage their neighbors in improving their own health.
We work with many local partners - including Tacoma Housing Authority, Tacoma Public Schools, Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department and University of Washington Tacoma- to provide individual support in making healthy lifestyle changes, to provide activities and engage neighbors in changing policies and/or systems that impact their health.
We oppose the War Pony Smoke Shop from being established in the empty lot at: 4206 E Portland Ave Tacoma, WA 98404 for the following reasons:
• The residents of the East Side have been asking City Council and local leaders for many years to help them develop this area. Their number one request is for a full size grocery store.
• This smoke shop is within walking distance of churches, a temple, several elementary schools and a middle school. Many of the residents, including children from Salishan and other neighborhoods on the East Side walk to these places daily and would have to walk past the smoke shop.
• Salishan Community Health Advocates have been working for the last six years helping residents to live healthier lives, this includes quitting all tobacco products.
