V8 Supercars wants to hold a race at Sydney Olympic Park and in doing this the government will have to pay all costs; this could cost taxpayers $30 million and involve pulling up hundreds of trees and kilometres of tarmac. The V8 race in Canberra in 1999 led to a net loss of more than $11 million over three years.
The board said the park authority could not "promote ecological management, sustainable building design, recycled water use, renewable energy and the hosting of international environmental conferences on the one hand, and showcase a motor car race on the other". The authority said the circuit proposed by V8 Supercars Australia would "require the removal of up to 500 well-established trees, up to two kilometres of road median strips, and modification to numerous traffic intersections".
Why pay over $30 million to move the race 5 minutes down the road from the international race way called Eastern Creek?
We, the undersigned, call on the NSW government to not allow a race to be held at Sydney Olympic Park.
