Publicity in the Batemans Bay Post and on ABC radio has helped raise some community awareness but we need now to raise the level of our voices if we are going to have any chance of turning off this catchment logging madness.
At this stage logging is planned to commence in Wandera compartments 575 and 576 in about two weeks.
This is despite there having been; no formal advice to residents neighbouring 575 & 576 or the other planned compartments 568, 569 and 570, no meaningful consultation over plans with residents (one might have thought that communication would be one of FCNSW strong points!), no approved Harvest Plans or maps, no adequate advice in the form required by the Integrated Forests Operation Approval (IFOA) which details the operating requirements for logging, no advice of the final haulage route for the timber..... (for the initial work FCNSW has said they will not use Araluen Road), no acceptance of arguments pointing out;the danger to the catchment, or the lack of any environmental, economic, social or community benefits of the logging, no acceptance of the view that if the demand for hardwood is low, the need to intensively log the catchment needs to be reviewed.
We object to the proposed logging of the Deua River catchment area and we are concerned about:
* How this will endanger the Eurobodalla Shire's major source of drinking water.
* The needless destruction of vegetation and habitat in the catchment.
* The lack of consultation by FCNSW with residents of the area.
* The lack of response to the concerns of residents of the Deua River Valley.
* The lack of any positives to come from the logging of the catchment area.
* The use of the fragile and dangerous Araluen Road and Larrys Mt Road by log haulage vehicles.
* The lack of information available to the public on the scale of the proposed logging project.
* Lack of information as to whether an environmental impact assessment has been conducted to ensure there are no endangered species in the proposed area.
We want the proposed logging stopped before an important forest is destroyed and local water catchment adversely affected!
