Yankton Sioux in Marty, South Dakota is currently facing attempted construction of a hog farm by Long View Farms from Hull, Iowa on their tribal land.
Hog farms notoriously pose numerous health and environmental dangers with the large amounts of waste and other harmful chemicals that pollute the land, air, and water. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has stated that concentrated animal feeding operations are one of the primary causes of water pollution in the United States.
Several illegal and arbitrary arrests including women and youth have been made by the state police of South Dakota in Yankton Sioux jurisdiction.
We demand that all construction of the hog farm cease and that human, environmental, and tribal rights are upheld.
We, the undersigned, call on Charles Mix County and the state of South Dakota to prohibit all construction of the hog farm by Long View Farms of Hull, Iowa on the Yankton Sioux reservation and surrounding area.
