The current class of 2011 (8th graders at Kimpton Middle School) are being given a high school math credit if they are taking Algebra 1 this year.
Some students (at Kimpton) are being given the opportunity to take a foreign language class and they are also going to receive a high school credit for the class. Any student that has already taken and passed Algebra 1 at Kimpton and is currently in 9th through 12th grade are not being "GRANDFATHERED" in to receive the credit for taking the same class in 8th grade.
The graduation requirements have not been changed for the class of 2011 and beyond and remain at 21 total credits required to graduate. Giving high school credit in the 8th grade will allow students to graduate with up to 5 math credits which could/would look very impressive on their transcripts. Allowing them to take a foreign language for high school credit in the 8th grade also does not make sense.
By giving this select group of students the chance to earn high school credits in the 8th grade gives them an unfair advantage over all of the other students. By not giving the students who have already taken and passed Algebra 1 in the 8th grade you are sending them the wrong message as well.
These students are not being treated the same and are being sent the message that their hard work is not as important as the current 8th graders.
We, the undersigned, parents of 9th through 12th grade students in the Stow Munroe Falls City School district would like to make a formal request that high school credit will not be given to 8th grade students at Kimpton Middle School, in any subject.
