At the 2013 city New Years Eve public events, animals could be found in the crowds, scared and tired - used for busking and attracting screaming fans to pet and hold.
Aside from the fireworks that scare and kill many animals annually, while many go missing as they try to escape the noise, to see tired birds clinging in fear to their 'owners' while hundreds of hands are thrust at them for a pat or hold - or laying in the busy streets with costumes or hats in front of them to beg for money, little thought is given to the fear or welfare. No protection, no consideration.
Please make Perth an animal-considerate city - not another Phuket where animals die for tourist entertainment.
We, the undersigned, call on Perth's Lord Mayor, Lisa Scaffidi, to prohibit the use of animals in unprotected situations.
Therefore, the use of animals for busking, performing for money, brought into frightening crowds without protection, handled by crowds without consideration for their welfare. And especially on nights where fireworks are planned.
Research has shown that appalling cruelty towards animals for tourism purposes in many nations results in unnecessary suffering.
Please don't let Perth become another cruel city.
