Reasons for a call for a new poll in Kenya
1. Though the election day was peaceful with record voter turn out, there are obvious flaws in tallying arising from unsigned and/or altered form 16, 16A and 17.
2. The admission by the Electoral Commission of Kenya ECK that there were substantial queries that were not resolved. S. Kivuitu, the chairperson, is quoted saying that he does not know whether Kibaki actually won, and that he released the results out of pressure.
3. Observers comments, local and international, indicate disparities in results announced at the polling stations and those by the ECK hence evidence of a doctored result.
4. Kenya has, since the elections, been reduced to a police state.
5. The government ban on the media meaning that people are being denied access to information.
6. The killings, wanton destruction of property, internal displacement of people, the protest marches and the economic decline are adversely affecting Kenyans.
7. The continued stay in power of Kibaki may lead to the destruction by state agents of any evidence of a stolen election.
We Petition:
• That Mwai Kibaki steps aside to allow for a new, free, fair, credible and transparent presidential poll.
• That the ECK be disbanded and in its place a new body be put in place to oversee the poll.
• That the ban on the media be lifted with immediate effect.
• That the freedom of assembly, a fundamental right, be respected.
• That the police protect the lives and property of all.
