Lynwood Gardens is a community garden and nature reserve in Broomhall, Sheffield, a unique urban greenspace that is managed using traditional, sustainable methods and is home to a wide variety of plant and animal life. The Friends of Lynwood Gardens are a group of volunteers from the local community who maintain the site for the benefit of all users, having rescued it from overgrowth and dereliction, installed pathways and seating, established a wildflower meadow, performance space, litter bins, and a pond.

The Friends also installed 12 lighting bollards that lined the main paths through the site and provided security and access for the local community, discouraged crime and antisocial behaviour, and provided peace of mind for some users (e.g. the elderly) who might otherwise not use the site after dark. These light-duty units have since been vandalised and need to be replaced, and the Friends hope to secure funding from Awards for All which will allow us to buy and professionally install heavy-duty, vandal-resistsnt units, the kind that are used in city centres and public parks and will withstand rough treatment.

We the undersigned are users of Lynwood Gardens, Broomhall, Sheffield, and we support the Friends of Lynwood Gardens in their bid to secure funding from Awards for All for new, vandal-resistant lighting units for the site.

Lynwood is a well-used community garden and nature reserve and an excellent resource for the people of Broomhall and across Sheffield. New lighting will make the site more accessible and safer for existing users, encourage new users, and improve the quality of community events.
