I'm a 25 year old single mother who has had Type 1 Diabetes since the age of 5. My daughter is 2 years old. Since my pregnancy I have lost my hypo symptoms which means I can lose conciousness before realising that there is a problem. As a result of this I took on a dog from a local rescue as it has been well documented that dogs can alert their diabetic owners to an impending hypo.
Almost 2 years later my Housing Association have decided to try to take me to court to force me to get rid of him (I own my flat so can't just move to new accommodation as I'm in negative equity). Removing Harley (my 2 year old Labrador) could result in serious injury or even loss of life for myself of my young daughter.
Currently he is not a registered assistance dog as there was a 3 year waiting list for a registered dog. I have spoken to the charity (Hypo Alert Dogs UK) who who will agree to assess him for training and my own trainer feels confident that he would be suitable for this however he first requires his Kennel club Good Citizen awards, something which, all told, will cost me in the region of £500 (needs some 1-2-1 lessons first to improve his manners on-lead).

The policy regards pets in flats under Sheffield Homes' jurisdiction needs to be reviewed as it makes no allowance at all for animals which provide an essential, lifesaving service to their owners.
Please, have a heart and save a life. Lets make a start here and get the rules changed to prevent anyone else having to go through this.
