Mountain View Ice Arena Closing --Skating User Community to City Bible Church
- Target:
- City Bible Church
- Region:
- United States of America
It is understood that the church has been pursuing the option to build a school in the current location of the rink, but funding was first needed to be raised, etc before a conversion could take place. We were surprised to find out thru City Bible School members that are users of the ice arena that City Bible Church is planning to utilize Mt. View Ice Arena space as an indoor athletic facility. Renovations for this would be starting this fall before completion of the school conversion.
This rink is a vital part of the Vancouver and Greater Portland Metro community. Children and families will be severely impacted by the loss of this facility. We have figure skating competitors training for regional thru National qualifying competitions for this fall, as well as hockey teams preparing for a fall league season. The other rink facilities in Portland do not have the space to absorb all of these skaters and coaches. Many of these athletes will be forced to quit and coaches and employees will loose their jobs with no option to continue work in the field they were trained in.
The user groups impacted are as follows:
• Vancouver Learn to Play Hockey Program
• Vancouver Jr Rangers Youth Hockey
• Portland Ice Skating Club
• Speed Skating
• Learn to Skate
• Sled Hockey for Adaptive Sport Athletes
• Men’s Hockey League
• Meadow Glade, King’s Way Christian, and multiple Clark County Schools
• Special Olympics
These user groups compile approximately 2,000 individuals on a weekly basis, not including the recreational usage for public skating for the Vancouver-Portland Metropolitan area.
The Mountain View Ice Arena Skating Community formed from various different user groups of Mountain View Ice Arena (14313 SE Mill Plain Blvd. Vancouver, WA) would like to petition City Bible Church due to recent information that the ice arena facility will be closing August 31, 2018.
We are asking for the following to be considered:
• Regular communication to the user groups regarding the status of the rink facility.
• Giving an Extension of a lease thru March 2019 to allow for the impacted user groups to find a new temporary location.
• Potentially consider City Bible School utilizing the current ice facility for Learn to Skate Classes in the interim.
We apologize if we have mis-stated any information above. Our goal is to foster a partnership that can lead to a desired outcome for all parties. We understand the need of the church to utilize the space, and we would appreciate your consideration of allowing us the appropriate time to find a new temporary solution for all of the parties that are displaced. We hope you recognize that Ice Rink Facilities are more difficult to establish than most recreational facilities.
Thank you for your consideration.
