Malden is in the middle of an opioid epidemic where many citizens face addiction towards this menacing drug. 90% of adults with an opioid dependence start at the age of 18 while 50% start as early as 15. The introduction of Health classes can help with the prevention of opioid abuse and educate students on the risks of drug use. Without an effective system of mental health education, many individuals with mental illnesses resort to drugs or opioids in the wake of effective treatment. Education is a right, and the students of this district deserve an education that will prepare them for the modern world.
We, the undersigned, call on the School Committee of the District of Malden to add effective and universal K - 12 health education to the District's curriculum.
