March is Women's History Month and our family felt it appropriate to recognize and acknowledge the accomplishments of our mother, grandmother, sister, matriarch and trailblazer Marvis Barnes. In 1959, Marvis Barnes & Myra Harris were the first African American females to graduate from Towson University formerly State Teachers College at Towson. In an effort to commemorate the efforts and sacrifice of this major historical milestone, the family of Marvis Barnes along with Myra Harris and the Towson Black Alumni Alliance are inviting interested parties to sign a petition for the renaming of Paca House and Carroll Hall in their honor.
The landmark U.S. Supreme Court Case, Brown v. Board of Education, served as a catalyst to help Marvis Barnes obtain the same education opportunities as other white students. The court case changed the education requirements of the once all-white public schools and colleges across the country which included Towson University (TU).
Marvis Barnes & Myra Harris enrolled in the State Teachers College at Towson as Freshman and graduated in the class of 1959 as the first African American students with Bachelor's degrees in Education.
