Straw Free Waiheke is committed to make our island paradise 100% plastic straw free.
We’re halfway there with 31 local venues already pledging to ditch plastic straws. But we need your voice to show the rest that our wonderful Waiheke community care about the state of our beaches & oceans.
It all started with the Earth Optimism team organising regular beach clean ups and seeing the heart breaking amount of single use plastics on our beaches & in our oceans.
Over 500,000 straws are being produced every day globally. Unfortunately, a vast majority of these straws end up in our streets and seas. In a year, it has been estimated that at least 1 million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals and sea turtles are harmed when they entangle themselves in or ingest plastic pollution littered in our oceans.
We’re asking our cherished local businesses to ditch harmful plastic straws by:
1. Not putting straws in drinks unless asked
2. Using paper straws
It’s such a simple change, and the impact would be huge.

We, the undersigned, are calling on Waiheke venues to ditch plastic straws.
Far too many of them end up on our beautiful Waiheke beaches, and ultimately the oceans.

It’s so easy to ditch the plastic straws in your venue:
1. Don’t put straws in drinks unless asked (you’ll be surprised how few do ask)
2. Use paper straws, or reusable bamboo or stainless steel if you wanna be really fancy. Gulf Foods will be making bulk orders of paper straws
It’s such a simple change, and the impact would be huge.
