Make the Intersection of Highway 98 and Highway 83 Safer Now!
- Target:
- Secretary, Florida Department of Transportation
- Region:
- United States of America
The intersection at Highway 98 and Highway 83 (Blue Mountain Road) in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida is unsafe.
In the last few weeks there have been numerous traffic crashes at the intersection, resulting in injury and death to the motorists. The intersection is too wide; the traffic "stacks" up in the intersection; there are no street lights; and the speed limit is 65 mph.
In addition, this is part of a detour route due to County Road 30A being closed at Draper Lake, and the normal traffic has increased considerably. Motorists traveling up Highway 83 and turning left onto Highway 98 are turning into 65 mph traffic; motorists are running the stop sign on Highway 83, and "stacking" cars up in the intersection, blocking visibility.
A deputy sheriff positioned there, 12 hours, 7 days a week, for the last few weeks, with lights emergency lights flashing, as failed to stop crashes; the most recent one resulting in a death at the scene.
We, the undersigned residents and visitors to Santa Rosa Beach, in south Walton County, Florida, request that you, as head of the Florida Department of Transportation, take immediate steps to improve the flow of traffic through the intersection of Highways 98 and 83 (Blue Mountain Road) to make driving through this intersection and roadway safer for the public.
We request that this be done immediately to help in the prevention of any more death or injury.
