Thousands of college students come to Washington from all over the United States to study politics, only to learn that our Congress, unlike the federal governments of all other Western democracies, fails to represent the citizens of its capital city.
"Taxation without representation" is more than just a license plate motto. Daily, it is a major issue obstacle to the governance of the District of Columbia. It isn't possible for our democratically-elected DC government to do its job when the obstructionist, Republican-controlled House of Representatives can change or veto any budget measure passed by our local officials.
As college students from across the country represented by those in power in Congress, we have a unique ability to affect change. We're calling on them to make the change that DC deserves.
Representation in the House alone is not enough. We demand full-blown statehood for DC.
As college students, and as advocates, we want what’s best for the city we have come to love. The District’s 600,000 residents deserve the same right to local and national representation as those from the rest of the United States.
