Macedon Ranges, Victoria: A matter of urgency for public safety along Nursery Road, Macedon
- Target:
- Macedon Ranges Shire Council
- Region:
- Australia
The Macedon/Macedon Ranges community has identified that personal safety is compromised whilst walking along Nursery Road, Macedon.
The following key issues have heightened the concern for safety of the public:
The Nursery Road railway bridge was raised In April 2014 for the purpose of allowing larger vehicles to access the Macedon town-ship. Traffic has increased considerably, creating an added safety risk for pedestrians walking or cycling under the bridge.
Pedestrians accessing this route for connections to shops, community facilities, Macedon Primary School (Macedon Primary School enrolment increased from 205 to 251 over the past four years) and the Macedon Reservoir, currently take unreasonable risk to personal safety whilst walking on the road.
At the intersection of Smith Street and Nursery Road exists a hazardous blind corner for pedestrians and approaching traffic; predictive behaviour is compromised on days with unfavourable conditions, such as wet/foggy days with low visibility.
At night the Nursery Road Railway Bridge is unlit and on both sides of the road are steep drop offs, this adds an increased safety risk for drivers and pedestrians.
The situation is compounded by the lack of signage warning drivers that they share the road with pedestrians and cyclists (often children).
We the undersigned electors of the Macedon Ranges Shire request that a permanent Boardwalk be constructed on the northern side of Nursery Road from the Macedon Reservoir continuing through the northern arch of the railway bridge to the intersection of Smith Street and Nursery Road.
The Boardwalk would need to continue on the eastern side of Smith Street and link with the existing footpath previously constructed outside Macedon Primary School. The path should conform to the standards and specification of the permanent footpath on the eastern side of Smith Street adjacent to the school.
The Boardwalk would address the right to safety and adequate care for all Macedon residents and tourists. The construction should be undertaken as a matter of urgency for public safety and the duty of care for the public.
